O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Her family raised her by their parents who resided in Wheaton in Illinois and then graduated in 1981, with a degree from the Wheaton North High School. She appeared as a model in commercials for a while prior to moving to Los Angeles. Her career started as model and actress for commercials with Montgomery Ward. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedic film, She's Having a Baby. She then played a recurring part in the ABC comedy China Beach with Dana Delany. In addition, she has guest-starred in independent films and television shows. Donna Abandando was her first major role on ABC's police show NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the team's big-haired secretary of ABC's NYPD Blue from 1993 to 1996. Every year, she was awarded Emmy Award nods for Outstanding Actress for a Drama Series. The entire cast as well as O'Grady won an award from the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance in an Drama Series Ensemble in 1995.
